February 11 & 12, 2023NAPS Training Weekend “A Different Approach”

This weekend training session will consist of how to improve engagement with your dog.  Classical Conditioning and Operant Conditioning will be discussed with examples for all to witness the benefits. Each handler with their dog will participate with various drills throughout the day.  There will be multiple groups and stations for various topics.  Numerous handouts will be provided to support topics discussed.

Purpose of training:   
Acquire better dog handling skills
Improve cooperation between dog and handler
Improve dog obedience
Minimize the use of e collar (less escape avoidance)


8:00AM-11:30AM Morning Training Session
11:45-12:45 Lunch: BBQ Sandwich and Chips
1:00PM-4:00PM Afternoon Training Session
5:00PM-Until Dinner:  Pheasant and/or Quail, Baked Potato, Salad
After Dinner:  Social time for children and adults, S’mores or Homemade Ice Cream
The fee for this training opportunity will be $75 per family and will include lunch for Saturday. This will cover NAPS fees for the property rental and birds used for training purposes.  The number of participants will be held to 25, maximum.

8:00AM-Noon Blood tracking, Retrieving games, or Fun Run
There will be a separate $25 fee per dog entered in the Sunday events.

April 15th & 16th 2023 – In light of the passage of the Motion to move the Annual meeting dates to a more weather friendly time-frame, our 2023 annual meeting will be held at the Elk Ridge Hunt Club in Bucyrus, OH on Sunday, April 15th & 16th, 2023.  We plan to have a jam-packed weekend of training opportunities, educational clinics, and of course the 3rd annual Patrick Saunders Memorial Fun Run.  Visit our Annual Meeting page for more information as we make updates.


May/June 2023 – Location and training topic TBD, though we are looking at the Pacific Northwest and either Steadiness and Backing or Duck Search and Force Fetch with Kyle Hough of Schwarzwald Kennels.  Kyle is an outstanding trainer and handler who has achieved multiple NAVHDA Versatile Champion titles.  He trains at the NAVHDA Natural Ability level through the Invitational level testing as well as AKC Master Hunter testing.  He is also one of the nicest people you will ever meet.
